Momiji Sushi & Izakaya Soft Opens in Downtown Silver Spring
Momiji Sushi & Izakaya has begun its soft opening in downtown Silver Spring at the former Cubano's Restaurant location. The Japanese restaurant serves sushi, sashimi, ramen, donburi and vegan options.
Momiji Sushi & Izakaya is now operating under a soft opening at 1201 Fidler Lane in downtown Silver Spring, taking over the space that housed Cubano's Restaurant for more than two decades before it closed in 2024.
The restaurant specializes in Japanese cuisine including sushi, sashimi, ramen and donburi rice bowls, alongside vegan offerings. Its sushi chef has over a decade of experience working in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., with training in both Korea and Japan. The business focuses on sourcing quality ingredients and following traditional sushi preparation methods.
The Silver Spring location is separate from a Momiji restaurant that operated in D.C.'s Chinatown neighborhood and closed in September 2025; the two establishments have different owners. The Silver Spring restaurant is registered in Maryland, with business filings listing an address in Centreville, Virginia.
Early diners have given mostly positive feedback, though some note that pricing runs higher than other sushi restaurants in the downtown Silver Spring area. The restaurant filed for its use and occupancy permit in mid-August, and its liquor license was approved last fall.
Momiji is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
