Bob's Soup Dumplings & Bar: Bethesda's most anticipated Shanghainese opening

Bob's Soup Dumplings & Bar, a new Shanghainese restaurant from the owners of Bob's Shanghai 66 in Rockville, is targeting a November 2026 opening in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle neighborhood. The menu will focus on soup dumplings, noodles, rice dishes and Shanghainese small plates, with a bar offering new appetizers tailored for casual dining.

The team behind Rockville's Bob's Shanghai 66 is bringing its soup dumplings to downtown Bethesda. Bob's Soup Dumplings & Bar is aiming to open in November 2026 at 7776 Norfolk Ave. in the Woodmont Triangle neighborhood, in the space that was previously Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza & Wings.

The project began with a different team, whose window signs went up in November 2025 reading "Bob's Shanghai", a name close enough to the Rockville restaurant to confuse neighbors. In February 2026, that team invited co-owner William La and his business partner Jing Yao "Jay" Wang to take it over. La has been training the new chefs at the Rockville kitchen.

About 80% of the Bethesda menu will match Rockville's: soup dumplings, noodle and rice dishes and Shanghainese small plates. The soup dumplings are the best reason to go, since they are what Bob's Shanghai 66 is known for. The other 20% will be new appetizers and dishes made for eating at the bar, which seats more than 15 and is something the Rockville restaurant does not have.

Most of the construction and renovation is finished; the restaurant is waiting on county inspections and permit approvals. Nearby are Medium Rare, Oishii Ramen Cafe, Rosetta Bakery, Kusshi Sushi, Call Your Mother and Jetties.

Bob's Shanghai 66 opened in 2003 as Bob's Noodles and won the best Chinese restaurant category in the Best of Bethesda 2025 Readers' Picks.
